Hadith #264

English Translation

Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Sulaymān, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith, from Zaynab — the wife of ʿAbdullāh (ibn Masʿūd) — who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said to the women: 'Give in charity, even from your jewelry.' She said: ʿAbdullāh was a man of modest means, a skilled craftswoman, and she used to spend on him and his children from her craft. She said to him: 'Is it acceptable for me to give my charity to you and to my brother's orphaned children?' ʿAbdullāh said: 'Ask the Prophet ﷺ about that.' She said: I went to the Prophet ﷺ and found at his door a woman from the Anṣār called Zaynab, asking about the same thing. Bilāl came out to us, and we said: 'Go to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and ask him about this, and do not tell him who we are.' He went and asked, and the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Who are they?' He said: 'Zaynab.' He said: 'Which of the Zaynabs?' He said: 'Zaynab the wife of ʿAbdullāh and Zaynab the Anṣāriyyah.' He said: 'Yes, they have two rewards: the reward of kinship and the reward of charity.' Ibn Numayr narrated to us: al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from Manṣūr, from ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith ibn al-Muṣṭaliq, from Zaynab the wife of ʿAbdullāh, who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ commanded us to give charity and said: 'Give charity, O women' — and he mentioned the hadith. ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us: Sufyān informed us, from al-Aʿmash, from Shaqīq, from ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith ibn al-Muṣṭaliq, from Zaynab, who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Give charity, O women' — and he mentioned it.
