English Translation
Yaʿqūb narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Isḥāq, Bushayir ibn Yasār narrated to me, from Sahl ibn Abī Ḥathmah who said: ʿAbdullāh ibn Sahl, a member of Banū Ḥārithah, went out with a group from Banū Ḥārithah to Khaybar to procure dates. He was attacked — his neck was broken and he was thrown into one of the water channels of Khaybar's springs. His companions searched for him until they found him, then they buried him. They came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and his brother ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Sahl approached along with his two cousins Ḥuwayyiṣah and Muḥayyiṣah — who were older than ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. But ʿAbd al-Raḥmān was the closest kin and claimant of blood, so he stepped forward and spoke to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ before his cousins. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Let the eldest speak first.' So ʿAbd al-Raḥmān stepped back, and Ḥuwayyiṣah spoke, then Muḥayyiṣah, then ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. They said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, our companion was attacked and killed, and there is no enemy in Khaybar except the Jews.' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Will you name his killer, then swear fifty oaths, and he will be handed over to you?' They said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, we cannot swear to what we did not witness.' He said: 'Then they will swear fifty oaths for you and be absolved of your companion's blood.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, we cannot accept the oaths of Jews — their disbelief is far greater than that they would swear falsely.' So the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ paid the blood money from his own resources: one hundred camels. Sahl said: 'By Allāh, I shall never forget a red young she-camel among them that kicked me as I was driving her.'
