حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الرَّقِّيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَجَّاجُ عَنْ فُرَاتِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَهُوَ فُرَاتٌ الْقَزَّازُ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ جَالِسًا عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ وَكَانَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ جَعَلَهُ
عَلَى الْقَضَاءِ إِذْ جَاءَهُ كِتَابُ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكَ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّكَ كَتَبْتَ تَسْأَلُنِي عَنْ الْجَدِّ وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ خَلِيلًا دُونَ رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَاتَّخَذْتُ ابْنَ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ وَلَكِنَّهُ أَخِي فِي الدِّينِ وَصَاحِبِي فِي الْغَارِ جَعَلَ الْجَدَّ أَبًا وَأَحَقُّ مَا أَخَذْنَاهُ قَوْلُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ

English Translation
Maʿmar ibn Sulaymān al-Raqqī narrated to us, al-Ḥajjāj narrated to us, from Furāt ibn ʿAbdullāh — Furāt al-Qazzāz — from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr who said: I was sitting with ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUtbah ibn Masʿūd — whom Ibn al-Zubayr had appointed as judge — when a letter came from Ibn al-Zubayr: 'Peace be upon you. As for what follows: You wrote asking me about the grandfather [in inheritance]. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "If I were to take a khalīl (intimate friend) from this ummah besides my Lord عز وجل, I would have taken Ibn Abī Quḥāfah (Abū Bakr). But he is my brother in religion and my companion in the cave." He made the grandfather [inherit as] a father. And the most deserving position we should adopt is the saying of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq رضي الله عنه.'
