Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, whose full name was Khalid ibn Zayd al-Khazraji, was a senior Companion from the Ansar of Medina of distinguished nobility. He was the host of the Prophet ﷺ when the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Medina after the Hijra — his house was the first the Prophet stayed at while awaiting the building of his mosque and quarters, an honor Abu Ayyub was deeply proud of. He participated in the Battle of Badr and all subsequent major campaigns. Even in his advanced years, he continued participating in military expeditions out of love for jihad, and he died during the Arab siege of Constantinople around 52 AH at a very advanced age. His dying wish was to be buried as close to the walls of Constantinople as possible. He narrated approximately 155 hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ covering prayer, supplication, fasting, and the Prophet's conduct. His tomb in Istanbul remains a visited site to this day. His narrations are found in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and all the major Sunan collections.
