قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُبَارَكِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ مُوسَى عَنْ أَبِي رَزِينٍ الْعُقَيْلِيِّ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ يُحْيِي اللَّهُ الْمَوْتَى قَالَ أَمَا مَرَرْتَ بِأَرْضٍ مِنْ أَرْضِكَ مُجْدِبَةٍ ثُمَّ مَرَرْتَ بِهَا مُخْصَبَةً قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ كَذَلِكَ النُّشُورُ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَمَا الْإِيمَانُ قَالَ أَنْ تَشْهَدَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَ
سُولُهُ وَأَنْ يَكُونَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكَ مِمَّا سِوَاهُمَا وَأَنْ تُحْرَقَ بِالنَّارِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنْ تُشْرِكَ بِاللَّهِ وَأَنْ تُحِبَّ غَيْرَ ذِي نَسَبٍ لَا تُحِبُّهُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَإِذَا كُنْتَ كَذَلِكَ فَقَدْ دَخَلَ حُبُّ الْإِيمَانِ فِي قَلْبِكَ كَمَا دَخَلَ حُبُّ الْمَاءِ لِلظَّمْآنِ فِي الْيَوْمِ الْقَائِظِ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ لِي بِأَنْ أَعْلَمَ أَنِّي مُؤْمِنٌ قَالَ مَا مِنْ أُمَّتِي أَوْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ عَبْدٌ يَعْمَلُ حَسَنَةً فَيَعْلَمُ أَنَّهَا حَسَنَةٌ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ جَازِيهِ بِهَا خَيْرًا وَلَا يَعْمَلُ سَيِّئَةً فَيَعْلَمُ أَنَّهَا سَيِّئَةٌ وَاسْتَغْفَرَ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مِنْهَا وَيَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ إِلَّا هُوَ إِلَّا وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ

English Translation
ʿAlī ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, ʿAbdullāh — meaning Ibn al-Mubārak — informed us, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Jābir informed us, from Sulaymān ibn Mūsā, from Abū Razīn al-ʿUqaylī who said: I came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, how does Allāh bring the dead to life?' He said: 'Have you not passed by land of yours that was barren, then passed by it when it was fertile?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Likewise is the Resurrection.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, what is faith?' He said: 'That you testify there is no god but Allāh alone, with no partner, and that Muḥammad is His slave and messenger; and that Allāh and His Messenger are more beloved to you than all else; and that being burned in fire is more beloved to you than associating partners with Allāh; and that you love someone unrelated by kinship, loving him only for the sake of Allāh عز وجل. When you are like that, the love of faith has entered your heart just as the love of water enters the thirsty man on a scorching day.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, how can I know that I am a believer?' He said: 'There is no servant of my ummah — or this ummah — who does a good deed knowing it is good and that Allāh عز وجل will reward him for it, and who does not do a bad deed without knowing it is bad and seeking forgiveness from Allāh عز وجل, knowing that none forgives except Him, except that he is a believer.'
