Hadith #380

English Translation

ʿAbdullāh [ibn Aḥmad] said: Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥajjāj al-Nājī narrated to me, ʿAbd al-Qāhir ibn al-Sarī narrated to us, a son of Kinānah ibn ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās narrated to me, from his father, that his father al-ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās narrated to him: that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ supplicated on the evening of ʿArafah for his ummah, asking for forgiveness and mercy, and he supplicated at length. Allāh عز وجل answered him: 'I have done so and forgiven your ummah, except those among them who wrong one another.' He said: 'O Lord, You are able to forgive the wrongdoer and compensate the wronged one with better than his grievance.' But that evening there was only that. The next morning at Muzdalifah, he supplicated again for his ummah. It was not long before the Prophet ﷺ smiled. Some of his companions said: 'O Messenger of Allāh — may my father and mother be your ransom — you laughed at a time when you do not usually laugh. What made you laugh? May Allāh make you smile.' He said: 'I smiled at the enemy of Allāh, Iblīs, when he learned that Allāh عز وجل had answered my prayer for my ummah and forgiven the wrongdoer. He began wailing with destruction and woe, pouring dust on his head. I smiled at his anguish.'
