He said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Mughīrah al-Ḥizāmī narrated to me, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAyyāsh al-Samaʿī al-Anṣārī al-Qubāʾī — of Banū ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf — narrated to me, from Dalham ibn al-Aswad ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn Ḥājib ibn ʿĀmir ibn al-Muntafiq al-ʿUqaylī, from his father, from his uncle Laqīṭ ibn ʿĀmir. Dalham said: And my father al-Aswad also narrated it to me from ʿĀṣim ibn Laqīṭ: that Laqīṭ went out as a delegate to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ with a companion of his called Nahīk ibn ʿĀṣim ibn Mālik ibn al-Muntafiq. Laqīṭ said: My companion and I set out until we reached the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ at the end of Rajab. We came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and arrived just as he finished the dawn prayer. He stood among the people as a preacher and said: 'O people, I have been saving my voice for four days. Now let me make you hear! Is there any man whose people sent him saying: "Learn for us what the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ says," but then he let himself be distracted by his own thoughts, or his companion\'s talk, or by misguidance? I will be asked: "Did you convey?" Listen and you shall live! Sit down, sit down!' The people sat, and my companion and I stood until his attention and gaze were free for us. I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, what do you know of the Unseen?' He laughed, by the life of Allāh, shook his head, and knew I was seeking to catch something from him. He said: 'Your Lord عز وجل has kept five keys of the Unseen that none knows but Allāh' — and he gestured with his hand. I said: 'What are they?' He said: 'Knowledge of death — He knows the death of each of you, though you do not. Knowledge of the seed when it is in the womb — He knows it, though you do not. Knowledge of what is in tomorrow — what you will eat tomorrow, though you do not know it. Knowledge of the day of rain — He looks upon you in distress and deprivation, worried, and He keeps laughing, knowing that relief is near.' Laqīṭ said: 'We shall never lack goodness from a Lord who laughs.' 'And knowledge of the Day of the Hour.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, teach us what you teach the people and what you know, for we are from a tribe that no one believes as we do — not Madhhij who tower over us, nor Khathʿam who are our allies, nor our own clan.' He said: 'You will remain for a time, then your Prophet ﷺ will pass away, then you will remain for a time, then the Scream will be sent — by the life of your God, it will leave nothing on its surface alive, and even the angels with your Lord عز وجل [will die]. Then your Lord عز وجل will traverse the earth, which will be empty of people. Then your Lord عز وجل will send rain from near the Throne, and by the life of your God, it will leave no place where a slain man fell or a dead man was buried without splitting open his grave, until he is seated upright from his head. Your Lord will say: "What is this?" — regarding what he was in. He will say: "O Lord, it was only yesterday" — for he thinks his life was recent. I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, how will He gather us after the winds, decay, and wild beasts have scattered us?' He said: 'I will inform you of the like of that among Allāh\'s signs: you looked upon the earth when it was dead and decayed, and you said it would never live again. Then your Lord عز وجل sent rain upon it, and within days you looked upon it and it was one green expanse. By the life of your God, He is more able to gather them than water is able to gather the vegetation of the earth. They will emerge from their graves and their places of death, and you will look at Him and He will look at you.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, how can we — filling the earth — look at Him when He is one Being, and He look at us?' He said: 'I will inform you of the like of that among Allāh\'s عز وجل signs: the sun and moon are a small sign of His — you see them and they see you at the same moment without crowding in seeing them. By the life of your God, He is more able to see you and have you see Him than you are to see them while they see you without crowding.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, what will our Lord عز وجل do with us when we meet Him?' He said: 'You will be presented before Him with your faces exposed — nothing of you will be hidden from Him. Your Lord عز وجل will take a handful of water in His hand and sprinkle it upon your faces. By the life of your God, not a drop will miss any of your faces. As for the Muslim, it will leave his face like a white silk garment. As for the disbeliever, it will brand his face like black tar. Then your Prophet ﷺ will depart, and the righteous will follow in his wake. They will cross a bridge over the Fire — one of you will step on an ember and say "Ouch!" and your Lord عز وجل will say: "Was that really it?" Then you will come upon the Pool of the Messenger — the thirstiest, by Allāh, that has ever come upon water as you have seen it. By the life of your God, none of you will stretch out his hand without a cup being placed upon it, purifying him of filth, urine, and impurity. The sun and moon will be withheld, and you will see neither of them.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, by what will we see?' He said: 'By the like of your sight at this very hour' — and that was before sunrise on a day when the earth was bright and facing the mountains. I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, what will we be rewarded for our good and bad deeds?' He said: 'A good deed is ten-fold, and a bad deed its equal — unless He pardons.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, is it Paradise or the Fire?' He said: 'By the life of your God, the Fire has seven gates — between any two gates a rider would travel for seventy years. And Paradise has eight gates — between any two a rider would travel for seventy years.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, what will we come upon in Paradise?' He said: 'Rivers of purified honey, rivers of wine causing no headache or regret, rivers of milk whose taste does not change, water that is not stale, and fruits — by the life of your God, such as you do not know, and better than the like of them besides, and purified spouses.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, will we have wives there, or will some of them be righteous?' He said: 'The righteous for the righteous — you will enjoy them as you enjoy in this world, and they will enjoy you, but there will be no childbearing.' Laqīṭ said: I said: 'Is that the utmost of what we will reach?' But the Prophet ﷺ did not answer him. I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, on what shall I pledge allegiance to you?' the Prophet ﷺ extended his hand and said: 'On establishing the prayer, giving the zakāh, separating from the polytheists, and not associating any god with Allāh besides Him.' I said: 'And shall we have what is between the east and the west?' the Prophet ﷺ withdrew his hand, thinking I was stipulating something he would not give me. I said: 'We will settle wherever we wish, and no person shall bear the crime of another.' He extended his hand and said: 'That is yours — you may settle wherever you wish, and none shall bear the crime of another upon you.' We departed, and he said: 'These two, by the life of your God, are among the most God-fearing of people in this world and the next.' Kaʿb ibn al-Khudriyyah — of Banū Bakr ibn Kilāb — said to him: 'Who are they, O Messenger of Allāh?' He said: 'Banū al-Muntafiq — they are worthy of that.' We departed, and I turned to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, is there any good for anyone who has passed in their time of ignorance?' A man from among Quraysh said: 'By Allāh, your father al-Muntafiq is in the Fire.' He said: It was as if hot coals fell between my skin and flesh because of what he said about my father before the people. I wanted to say: 'And your father, O Messenger of Allāh?' But then the better judgment prevailed, so I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, and your family?' He said: 'And my family. By the life of Allāh, any grave of an ʿĀmirī or Qurashī polytheist that you pass, say: "Muḥammad has sent me to you to give you tidings of what will grieve you — you will be dragged on your face and belly in the Fire."' I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, what brought that upon them when they were doing deeds they thought were good, and they thought they were doing right?' He said: 'That is because Allāh عز وجل sent a prophet to every seven nations, and whoever disobeyed his prophet was among the misguided, and whoever obeyed his prophet was among the rightly guided.'
