Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ زَيْدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي الْعَاصِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم
َ يَقُولُ الصِّيَامُ جُنَّةٌ كَجُنَّةِ أَحَدِكُمْ مِنْ الْقِتَالِ وَكَانَ آخِرُ مَا عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ بَعَثَنِي إِلَى الطَّائِفِ قَالَ يَا عُثْمَانُ تَجَوَّزْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَإِنَّ فِي الْقَوْمِ الْكَبِيرَ وَذَا الْحَاجَةِ

English Translation
Yūnus narrated to us, he said: Ḥammād — meaning Ibn Zayd — narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Hind, from Muṭarrif who said: I entered upon ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ, and he said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: "Fasting is a shield from the Fire, like the shield of one of you in battle." And the last thing the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ instructed me when he sent me to al-Ṭāʾif was: "O ʿUthmān, keep the prayer short, for among the people are the elderly and those with needs."
