Hadith #474

English Translation

ʿAlī ibn ʿAbdillāh narrated to us, Muʿādh ibn Hishām narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to me, from Qatādah, from al-Aḥnaf ibn Qays, from al-Aswad ibn Sarīʿ, that the Prophet ﷺ of Allāh ﷺ said: "Four will argue on the Day of Resurrection: a deaf man who could hear nothing, an insane man, a senile man, and a man who died during the period between prophets. As for the deaf man, he will say: 'My Lord, Islam came and I could hear nothing.' As for the insane man, he will say: 'My Lord, Islam came and the children were pelting me with dung.' As for the senile man, he will say: 'My Lord, Islam came and I could understand nothing.' As for the one who died in the period between prophets, he will say: 'My Lord, no messenger of Yours came to me.' Then He will take their covenants that they will obey Him, and He will send to them [a command]: 'Enter the Fire.' He said: By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muḥammad, if they were to enter it, it would be cool and safe for them." He said: ʿAlī narrated to us, Muʿādh ibn Hishām narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to me, from al-Ḥasan, from Abū Rāfiʿ, from Abū Hurayrah — the like of this, except that he said at the end: "Whoever enters it, it will be cool and safe for him, and whoever does not enter it will be dragged to it."
