English Translation
ʿAffān narrated to us, he said: Hammām narrated to us, Qatādah informed us, from Muṭarrif ibn ʿAbdillāh, from his father who said: I entered upon the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ while he was reciting: {Competition in worldly increase diverts you, until you visit the graves} [102:1-2]. He said: "The son of Ādam says: 'My wealth, my wealth!' But what is yours, O son of Ādam, from your wealth except what you ate and thus consumed, or what you wore and thus wore out, or what you gave in charity and thus sent forth?" Qatādah used to say: Every charity that has not been received [by the recipient] counts for nothing. Bahz narrated to us, he said: Hammām narrated to us, Qatādah narrated to us from Muṭarrif, from his father — he entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and heard him saying — and he mentioned the like of ʿAffān's hadith, without mentioning Qatādah's saying.
