English Translation

ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us, he said: Ibn Jurayj informed us, he said: Ismāʿīl ibn Kathīr Abū Hāshim al-Makkī narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim ibn Laqīṭ ibn Ṣabirah, from his father — the delegate of Banū al-Muntafiq — who said: My companion and I set out until we reached the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, but we did not find him. ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها fed us dates and prepared ʿaṣīdah (porridge) for us. Then the Prophet ﷺ came walking briskly and said: 'Have you been given anything to eat?' We said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allāh.' While we were thus, the shepherd came to the pen with a newborn lamb in his hand. He said: 'Has she given birth?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then slaughter a sheep for us.' Then he turned to us and said: 'Do not think — and he said "do not think" [second person], not "let him not think" [third person] — that we slaughtered the sheep for your sake. We have a hundred sheep and do not want them to increase beyond that. Whenever the shepherd delivers a lamb, we order him to slaughter a sheep.' Then he said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, tell me about wuḍūʾ.' He said: 'When you perform wuḍūʾ, be thorough and interlace the fingers. And when you clean your nose, be thorough — unless you are fasting.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, I have a wife' — and he mentioned her sharp tongue and how she troubled him. He said: 'Divorce her.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, she is a companion and has children.' He said: 'Then keep her and instruct her. If there is good in her, she will comply. And do not beat your wife as you would beat your slave-girl.'
