English Translation

ʿAbdullāh ibn Mughaffal narrated: On the day of al-Ḥudaybiyah, when we were under the tree, a branch of the tree was lifted from over the face of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib was writing the terms of peace between the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and the Quraysh. He wrote: 'This is what Muḥammad, the Messenger of Allāh, has agreed upon.' Suhayl ibn ʿAmr said: 'Do not write "the Messenger of Allāh" — if we had acknowledged you as the Messenger of Allāh, we would not have fought you. Write your name and your father's name.' So the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Write: This is what Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdillāh has agreed upon.' He told them: 'Write: Bismillāh ir-Raḥmān ir-Raḥīm.' Suhayl said: 'Write: Bismika Allāhumma [In Your name, O Allāh].' Then he said: 'On the condition that you do not obstruct us from the House, that we may circumambulate it.' Suhayl said: 'Not this year, so that the Arabs do not say that we were pressured — but next year.' So that was written. Suhayl said: 'And on the condition that if anyone comes to you from us, even if he is upon your religion, you shall return him to us.' The Muslims said: 'Subḥān Allāh! How can he be returned to the polytheists when he has come as a Muslim?!' While they were in this state, there came thirty armed young men who charged at them, so the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ supplicated against them and Allāh blinded their sight. We seized them, and the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ asked: 'Did you come under anyone's protection?' They said: 'No.' So he released them. Then Allāh عز وجل revealed: {And it is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them within [the area of] Makkah after He caused you to overcome them} [48:24].
