ʿAffān narrated to us, he said: Wuhayb narrated to us, ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us, from ʿAbbād ibn Tamīm, from ʿAbdullāh ibn Zayd ibn ʿĀṣim who said: When Allāh granted His Messenger the spoils on the day of Ḥunayn, he distributed among the people — to those whose hearts were to be reconciled (al-muʾallafah qulūbuhum) — but did not give the Anṣār anything. They felt hurt that they did not receive what the people received. So he addressed them: 'O assembly of the Anṣār, did I not find you astray and Allāh guided you through me? You were divided and Allāh united you through me? You were destitute and Allāh enriched you through me?' Each time he said something, they said: 'Allāh and His Messenger are more gracious.' He said: 'What prevents you from answering me?' They said: 'Allāh and His Messenger are more gracious.' He said: 'Had you wished, you could have said: You came to us such and such. Are you not content that the people leave with sheep and camels while you take the Messenger of Allāh home with you? Were it not for the Hijrah, I would have been a man of the Anṣār. If the people took one valley and gorge and the Anṣār another, I would take the valley of the Anṣār and their gorge. The Anṣār are the inner garment and the people are the outer garment. You will encounter selfishness after me, so be patient until you meet me at the Pool.'

Yaʿqūb narrated to us, he said: My father informed us, from Ibn Isḥāq. He said: Muḥammad ibn Muslim al-Zuhrī mentioned, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from ʿAbdullāh ibn Zayd ibn ʿAbd Rabbihi, who said: When the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ resolved to use a bell (nāqūs) to gather people for prayer — though he disliked it because it resembled the Christians — a visitor came to me at night while I was sleeping: a man wearing two green garments with a bell in his hand. I said to him: 'O servant of Allāh, will you sell the bell?' He said: 'What will you do with it?' I said: 'We will use it to call to prayer.' He said: 'Shall I guide you to something better than that?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You say: Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar. Ashhadu an lā ilāha illAllāh, Ashhadu an lā ilāha illAllāh. Ashhadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlullāh, Ashhadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlullāh. Ḥayya ʿalā al-ṣalāh, Ḥayya ʿalā al-ṣalāh. Ḥayya ʿalā al-falāḥ, Ḥayya ʿalā al-falāḥ. Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar. Lā ilāha illAllāh.' Then he stepped back a short distance and said: 'Then when you establish the prayer, you say: Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar. Ashhadu an lā ilāha illAllāh. Ashhadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlullāh. Ḥayya ʿalā al-ṣalāh. Ḥayya ʿalā al-falāḥ. Qad qāmat al-ṣalāh, Qad qāmat al-ṣalāh. Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar. Lā ilāha illAllāh.' When morning came, I went to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and told him what I had seen. He said: 'This is indeed a true vision, if Allāh wills.' Then he ordered the adhān to be called. Bilāl, the freed slave of Abū Bakr, used to call it and summon the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ to prayer. One morning, he came to call him for Fajr and was told: 'The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ is sleeping.' So Bilāl cried out at the top of his voice: 'Prayer is better than sleep!' (al-Ṣalātu khayrun min al-nawm). Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib said: This phrase was then added to the Fajr adhān.

Yaʿqūb narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to me, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, he said: Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥārith al-Taymī narrated to me, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn Zayd ibn ʿAbd Rabbihi, he said: My father ʿAbdullāh ibn Zayd narrated to me, he said: When the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ ordered the bell (nāqūs) to be struck to gather people for prayer, a man carrying a bell appeared to me while I was sleeping. I said to him: 'O servant of Allāh, will you sell the bell?' He said: 'What will you do with it?' I said: 'We will use it to call to prayer.' He said: 'Shall I guide you to something better than that?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You say: Allāhu Akbar (4x), Ashhadu an lā ilāha illAllāh (2x), Ashhadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlullāh (2x), Ḥayya ʿalā al-ṣalāh (2x), Ḥayya ʿalā al-falāḥ (2x), Allāhu Akbar (2x), Lā ilāha illAllāh.' Then he stepped back a short distance and said: 'When the prayer is established, say: Allāhu Akbar (2x), Ashhadu an lā ilāha illAllāh, Ashhadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlullāh, Ḥayya ʿalā al-ṣalāh, Ḥayya ʿalā al-falāḥ, Qad qāmat al-ṣalāh (2x), Allāhu Akbar (2x), Lā ilāha illAllāh.' When morning came, I went to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and told him what I had seen. He said: 'It is indeed a true vision, if Allāh wills. Stand with Bilāl and teach him what you saw, and let him call the adhān, for he has a louder voice than you.' So I stood with Bilāl and began teaching him, and he called the adhān. ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb heard it from his house and came out dragging his cloak, saying: 'By the One who sent you with the truth, I saw the same as what he was shown!' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'All praise is for Allāh.'

Yaḥyā ibn Ādam narrated to us, he said: Ibn Mubārak narrated to us, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Maḥmūd ibn Rabīʿ, from ʿItbān ibn Mālik who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ prayed the Ḍuḥā prayer, and we gave the salām when he gave the salām. He prayed with them in a mosque near them.

Sufyān narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī — and Sufyān was asked from whom — he said: It is Maḥmūd, if Allāh wills — that ʿItbān ibn Mālik was a man with impaired vision, and he mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ about missing the prayer. the Prophet ﷺ asked: 'Do you hear the call (to prayer)?' He said: 'Yes.' So he did not give him a concession.

Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us, he said: Sufyān ibn Ḥusayn informed us, from al-Zuhrī, from Maḥmūd ibn al-Rabīʿ — or al-Rabīʿ ibn Maḥmūd (Yazīd was unsure) — from ʿItbān ibn Mālik who said: I came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and said: 'I am a man with impaired vision, and between me and you is this valley and the darkness.' I asked him to come and pray in my house so I could take his prayer spot as my prayer place. He promised to do so. He came — he and Abū Bakr and ʿUmar. The Anṣār heard about it and came. A man among them called Mālik ibn al-Dukhshun stayed behind — he was suspected of hypocrisy. They were waiting over food and discussed among themselves. They said: 'He did not stay away though he knew the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ visited us, except out of hypocrisy.' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ was praying. When he finished, he said: 'Woe to him! Has he not testified that there is no deity but Allāh sincerely? For Allāh عز وجل has forbidden the Fire for whoever testifies to it.'

ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Maḥmūd ibn al-Rabīʿ, from ʿItbān ibn Mālik who said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, the floods come between me and the mosque of my people. I would like you to come and pray in a place in my house that I can take as a prayer spot.' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'We will do that.' When the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ came the next morning, he went to Abū Bakr and took him along. When the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ entered, he said: 'Where would you like?' I pointed to a part of the house. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ stood there, and we lined up behind him. He prayed two rakʿahs with us. We held him for khazīr (a meat and barley dish) we had prepared. The people of the neighborhood heard and began gathering, and the house filled up. A man from the people said: 'Where is Mālik ibn al-Dukhshum?' A man said: 'That one is among the hypocrites.' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Do not say that — he says lā ilāha illAllāh, seeking Allāh's face thereby.' He said: 'As for us, we see his face and his talk directed toward the hypocrites.' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Do not say that — he says lā ilāha illAllāh, seeking Allāh's face thereby.' A man from the people said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allāh.' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'If a servant arrives on the Day of Resurrection saying lā ilāha illAllāh, seeking Allāh's face thereby, the Fire is forbidden for him.' Maḥmūd said: I narrated this to a group that included Abū Ayyūb, who said: 'I do not think the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said this.' I said: 'If ʿItbān is still alive when I return, I will certainly ask him.' I returned and found him alive, blind, and still leading his people in prayer. I asked him, and he narrated it to me just as he had the first time. ʿItbān was a veteran of Badr. ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us, he said: Maʿmar informed us, from al-Zuhrī, from Maḥmūd ibn al-Rabīʿ, from ʿItbān ibn Mālik who said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'My sight has deteriorated.' And he mentioned the same meaning, except he said: 'Mālik ibn al-Dukhshun' — and sometimes said 'al-Dukhayshin' — and said: 'Forbidden from the Fire.' He did not say: 'He was a veteran of Badr.'

Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, he said: Jarīr — meaning Ibn Ḥāzim — narrated to us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān, he said: Abū Bakr ibn Anas ibn Mālik narrated to me, he said: My father came from Syria as a delegate and I was with him. We met Maḥmūd ibn al-Rabīʿ, who narrated a hadith to my father about ʿItbān ibn Mālik. My father said: 'O my son, memorize this hadith, for it is among the treasures of hadith.' When we returned to Madīnah, we asked about ʿItbān and found him alive — an old, blind man. We asked him about the hadith. He said: 'Yes, I lost my sight during the time of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. I said: O Messenger of Allāh, I have lost my sight and cannot pray behind you. If you would designate a place in my house as a mosque and pray in it, I would take it as my prayer spot.' He said: 'Yes, I will come to you tomorrow.' The next day after prayer, he turned to him, came, and said: 'O ʿItbān, where would you like me to designate?' He described a place to him. the Prophet ﷺ designated it and prayed there. Then he stayed — or sat. Word reached the surrounding Anṣār, and they came until the house was full. They mentioned the hypocrites and the harm and evil they caused, until they brought up a man called Mālik ibn al-Dukhshum, talking about his condition. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ remained silent. When they persisted, the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Does he not testify that there is no deity but Allāh?' The third time they said: 'He does say it.' He said: 'By the One who sent me with the truth, if he says it sincerely from his heart, the Fire will never consume him.' They said they were never happier about anything than what he said.

Ḥajjāj and Ḥujayn narrated to us, they said: Isrāʾīl narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ, from his maternal uncle Abū Burdah, who said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, we slaughtered our meat-sheep early.' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Before the prayer?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'That is merely a meat-sheep (not a valid sacrifice).' He said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, we have a young she-goat (ʿanāq jadhaʿah) that is dearer to me than a full-grown one.' He said: 'It suffices for you, but it will not suffice for anyone after you.'
