English Translation

ʿAbdullāh said: I found in my father's book in his own handwriting. He said: Abū Tawbah al-Rabīʿ ibn Nāfiʿ wrote to me, and in his letter: al-Haytham ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Wāqid, from Sulaymān ibn Mūsā, from Kathīr ibn Murrah, from Yazīd ibn al-Akhnas: that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "There should be no rivalry among you except in two matters: a man whom Allāh عز وجل has given the Qurʾān, and he stands with it during the hours of the night and the hours of the day, following what is in it — so another man says: 'If only Allāh had given me what He gave so-and-so, so I could stand with it as he stands.' And a man whom Allāh has given wealth, and he spends and gives charity — so another man says: 'If only Allāh had given me what He gave so-and-so, so I could give charity with it.'" A man said: "O Messenger of Allāh, what about courage (najdah) in a man?" And the rest of the ḥadīth was dropped.
