حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْخَيْرِ قَالَ عَرَضَ مَسْلَمَةُ بْنُ
مُخَلَّدٍ وَكَانَ أَمِيرًا عَلَى مِصْرَ عَلَى رُوَيْفِعِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ أَنْ يُوَلِّيَهُ الْعُشُورَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ صَاحِبَ الْمَكْسِ فِي النَّارِ

English Translation
Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, he said: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us, from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from Abū al-Khayr who said: Maslamah ibn Mukhallad — who was governor of Egypt — offered Ruwayfiʿ ibn Thābit the position of collecting the ʿushūr (tithes/customs duties). He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ saying: 'The collector of illegal taxes (ṣāḥib al-maks) is in the Fire.'"
