Hadith #55

English Translation

Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, he said: my father narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, he said: Bushayar ibn Yasār, the freed slave of Banū Ḥārithah, narrated to me, from Abū Burdah ibn Niyār, who said: I attended the ʿĪd with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. He said: My wife had gone, while I had gone to the prayer, to my sacrificial animal and slaughtered it and prepared food from it. When the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ prayed with us and I returned to her, she brought me food that was already prepared. I said: Where did this come from? She said: Your sacrificial animal — we slaughtered it and prepared food for you so you could eat when you returned. He said: I said to her: By Allāh, I feared this might not be proper. He said: So I went to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said: "It is nothing. Whoever slaughtered before we finish our prayer, it counts for nothing. So sacrifice again." He said: I looked for a musinnah [mature animal] but could not find one. So I came to him and said: By Allāh, O Messenger of Allāh, I looked for a musinnah but could not find one. He said: "Then find a jadhaʿah [young sheep] and sacrifice it." He said: So the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ granted him a concession regarding a young sheep, and he sacrificed it since he could not find a mature animal.
