English Translation

Sufyān narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, he said: ʿUbaydullāh ibn ʿAbdillāh informed me that he heard Abū Hurayrah, Zayd ibn Khālid al-Juhanī, and Shibl — Sufyān said: some people said Ibn Maʿbad, but what I memorized was Shibl — they said: We were with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ when a man stood and said: "I adjure you by Allāh, judge between us by the Book of Allāh." His opponent stood — and he was more learned — and said: "He is right. Judge between us by the Book of Allāh عز وجل, and permit me to speak." He said: "Speak." He said: "My son was a hired worker for this man, and he committed adultery with his wife. I ransomed him with one hundred sheep and a servant. Then I asked men of knowledge, and they told me that my son deserves one hundred lashes and banishment for a year, and that this man's wife deserves stoning." The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, I will judge between you by the Book of Allāh عز وجل. The hundred sheep and the servant are returned to you. Your son receives one hundred lashes and banishment for a year. And go, O Unays" — a man from the tribe of Aslam — "to this man's wife. If she confesses, stone her." So he went to her, and she confessed, and he stoned her.
