English Translation
ʿIṣām ibn Khālid narrated to us: Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us, from Saʿd ibn Marthad al-Raḥabī, he said: I heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥawshab narrating from Thawbān ibn Shahr al-Ashʿarī, he said: I heard Kurayb ibn Abrahah while he was sitting with ʿAbd al-Malik on his bed at Dayr al-Murrān, and they mentioned arrogance. Kurayb said: I heard Abū Rayḥānah say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Nothing of arrogance shall enter Paradise.' A man said: 'O Prophet of Allah, I love to adorn myself with the cord of my whip and the strap of my sandal.' the Prophet ﷺ said: 'That is not arrogance. Indeed, Allah عز وجل is Beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance is only rejecting the truth and looking down upon people.' — Meaning by the cord, the strap of the whip and the strap of the sandal.
