English Translation

Haytham ibn Khārijah narrated to us, Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from Rāshid ibn Dāwūd al-Ṣanʿānī, from Abū al-Ashʿath al-Ṣanʿānī, that he set out early to the mosque of Damascus. He met Shaddād ibn Aws, and al-Ṣunābiḥī was with him. I said: "Where are you two headed, may Allāh have mercy on you?" They said: "We are heading here, to a brother of ours who is ill, to visit him." So I went with them until they entered upon that man and said to him: "How are you this morning?" He said: "I am well, by Allāh's grace." Shaddād said to him: "Rejoice in the expiation of sins and the removal of misdeeds, for I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: 'Indeed, Allāh عز وجل says: When I test a believing servant of Mine and he praises Me for what I have tested him with, he rises from that sickbed as [sinless as] the day his mother bore him.' The Lord عز وجل says: 'I have restrained My servant and tested him. Record for him [good deeds] as you used to record for him when he was healthy.'"
