Laqīṭ ibn ʿĀmir رضي الله عنه narrated: I came in a delegation to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When we reached him, we did not find him at his home, so we found ʿĀʾishah Umm al-Muʾminīn. She ordered that food be prepared for us, and a dish with dates was brought. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, and he said: "Have you eaten anything?" or "Has anything been ordered for you?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the shepherd was driving the flock, and he had a newborn lamb that was bleating. He said: "What did she give birth to, O so-and-so?" He said: "A female." He said: "Then slaughter for us in its place a sheep." Then he said: "Do not think that we are slaughtering it for you — we have a hundred sheep and we do not want them to increase, so whenever a lamb is born, we slaughter a sheep in its place." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have a wife who has harshness in her tongue" — meaning she is sharp-tongued. He said: "Then divorce her." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, she has my companionship and I have a child from her." He said: "Then command her" — meaning admonish her — "for if there is any good in her, she will comply. And do not beat your wife as you beat your slave-girl." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about wuḍūʾ." He said: "Complete the wuḍūʾ, run your fingers between your fingers, and be thorough in istinshāq (sniffing water into the nose) unless you are fasting." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about the gathering." He said: "You will come on the Day of Resurrection with your foreheads and hands and feet radiant from the traces of wuḍūʾ — a distinction that no other nation shares with you. Whoever among you can extend his radiance, let him do so." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about Paradise." He said: "It is as Allah عز وجل wills. There are crystal palaces through which one can see the outside from within and the inside from without. In it are delights that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has imagined. There are wives who face no anxiety, and residents who face no departure — their youth does not fade and their garments do not wear out." Then he said: "Three things — Allah will not deny any Muslim all three: when he supplicates, he is answered; when he seeks forgiveness, he is forgiven; and the believers' supplication reaches him." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about our Lord عز وجل." He said: "Your Lord is not deaf or absent. He sees you, and there is nothing between Him and His creation that veils Him."
