Hadith #33Ungraded
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ عَنْ أَبِي ثَعْلَبَةَ الْخُشَنِيِّ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ اكْتُبْ لِي بِأَرْضِ كَذَا وَكَذَا بِأَرْضِ الشَّامِ لَمْ يَظْهَرْ عَلَيْهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَئِذٍ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَلَا تَسْمَعُونَ إِلَى مَا يَقُولُ هَذَا فَقَالَ أَبُو ثَعْلَبَةَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَتَظْهَرُنَّ عَلَيْهَا قَالَ فَكَتَبَ لَهُ بِهَا قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَرْضَنَا أَرْضُ صَيْدٍ فَأُرْسِلُ كَلْبِيَ الْمُكَلَّبَ وَكَلْبِيَ الَّذِي لَيْسَ بِمُكَلَّبٍ قَالَ إِذَا أَرْسَلْتَ كَلْبَكَ الْمُكَلَّبَ وَسَمَّيْتَ فَكُلْ مَا أَمْسَكَ عَلَيْكَ كَلْبُكَ الْمُكَلَّبُ وَإِنْ قَتَلَ وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَ كَلْبَكَ الَّذِي لَيْسَ بِمُكَلَّبٍ فَأَدْرَكْتَ ذَكَاتَهُ فَكُلْ وَكُلْ مَا رَدَّ عَلَيْكَ سَهْمُكَ وَإِنْ قَتَلَ وَسَمِّ اللَّهَ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَرْضَنَا أَرْضُ أَهْلِ كِتَابٍ وَإِنَّهُمْ يَأْكُلُونَ لَحْمَ الْخِنْزِيرِ وَيَشْرَبُونَ الْخَمْرَ فَكَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ بِآنِيَتِهِمْ وَقُدُورِهِمْ قَالَ إِنْ لَمْ تَجِدُوا غَيْرَهَا فَارْحَضُوهَا وَاطْبُخُوا فِيهَا وَاشْرَبُوا قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا يَحِلُّ لَنَا مِمَّا يُحَرَّمُ عَلَيْنَا قَالَ لَا تَأْكُلُوا لُحُومَ الْحُمُرِ الْإِنْسِيَّةِ وَلَا كُلَّ ذِي نَابٍ مِنْ السِّبَاعِ
Abū Thaʿlabah al-Khushanī said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, assign me a piece of land, such-and-such a land in al-Shām.' the Prophet ﷺ had not yet conquered it at that time. the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Do you not hear what this man says?' Abū Thaʿlabah said: 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will certainly prevail over it.' So the Prophet ﷺ wrote it for him. Then I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, our land is a land of hunting. I release my trained dog and my untrained dog.' He said: 'When you release your trained dog and mention the name of Allah, then eat what your trained dog catches for you — even if it kills. If you release your untrained dog and you reach the animal while it is still alive to slaughter it, then eat. Eat what your arrow returns to you — even if it kills — and mention the name of Allah.' I said: 'O Prophet of Allah, our land is a land of the People of the Book, and they eat pork and drink wine. How should I deal with their vessels and cooking pots?' He said: 'If you do not find anything else, wash them and cook in them and drink from them.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is lawful for us from what is forbidden to us?' He said: 'Do not eat the meat of domestic donkeys or any predatory beast with fangs.'
