حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ خُمَيْرٍ عَنْ شُرَحْبِيلَ ابْنِ شُفْعَةَ قَالَ وَقَعَ الطَّاعُونُ فَقَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْعَاصِ إِنَّهُ رِجْسٌ فَتَفَرَّقُوا عَنْهُ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ شُرَحْبِيلَ ابْنَ حَسَنَةَ فَقَالَ لَقَدْ صَحِبْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَي
ْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَمْرٌو أَضَلُّ مِنْ بَعِيرِ أَهْلِهِ إِنَّهُ دَعْوَةُ نَبِيِّكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ رَبِّكُمْ وَمَوْتُ الصَّالِحِينَ قَبْلَكُمْ فَاجْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا عَنْهُ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عَمْرَو بْنَ الْعَاصِ فَقَالَ صَدَقَ

English Translation
Shurahbīl ibn Shufʿah said: When the plague struck, ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ said: 'It is a filth, so scatter from it.' This reached Shurahbīl ibn Ḥasanah, who said: 'I was a Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and ʿAmr is more astray than his family's camel. It is the supplication of your Prophet and the mercy of your Lord, and the death of the righteous before you. So gather for it and do not scatter from it.' This reached ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, who said: 'He has spoken the truth.'
