Hadith #38

حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الدِّمَشْقِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُسْلِمَ بْنَ مِشْكَمٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْخُشَنِيَّ يَقُولُ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَخْبِرْنِي بِمَا يَحِلُّ لِي وَيُحَرَّمُ عَلَيَّ قَالَ فَصَعَّدَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَصَوَّبَ فِيَّ النَّظَرَ
فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْبِرُّ مَا سَكَنَتْ إِلَيْهِ النَّفْسُ وَاطْمَأَنَّ إِلَيْهِ الْقَلْبُ وَالْإِثْمُ مَا لَمْ تَسْكُنْ إِلَيْهِ النَّفْسُ وَلَمْ يَطْمَئِنَّ إِلَيْهِ الْقَلْبُ وَإِنْ أَفْتَاكَ الْمُفْتُونَ وَقَالَ لَا تَقْرَبْ لَحْمَ الْحِمَارِ الْأَهْلِيِّ وَلَا ذَا نَابٍ مِنْ السِّبَاعِ

English Translation
Abū Thaʿlabah al-Khushanī said: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, tell me what is lawful for me and what is forbidden for me.' the Prophet ﷺ looked up at me and looked down, then the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Righteousness (al-birr) is that which the soul finds tranquility in and the heart finds ease in. Sin (al-ithm) is that which the soul does not find tranquility in and the heart does not find ease in — even if the muftis give you rulings.' He also said: 'Do not go near the meat of domestic donkeys or any predatory beast with fangs.'
