حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حُيَيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي صَفْوَانُ بْنُ يَعْلَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم
َ قَالَ الْبَحْرُ هُوَ جَهَنَّمُ قَالُوا لِيَعْلَى فَقَالَ أَلَا تَرَوْنَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ { نَارًا أَحَاطَ بِهِمْ سُرَادِقُهَا } قَالَ لَا وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ يَعْلَى بِيَدِهِ لَا أَدْخُلُهَا أَبَدًا حَتَّى أُعْرَضَ عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَلَا يُصِيبُنِي مِنْهَا قَطْرَةٌ حَتَّى أَلْقَى اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ

English Translation
Yaʿlā ibn Umayyah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: "The sea is Jahannam." They said to Yaʿlā about it, and he said: "Do you not see that Allah عز وجل says: {A fire whose canopy will encompass them}?" He said: "No, by the One in Whose Hand is Yaʿlā's soul! I will never enter it until I am presented before Allah عز وجل, and not a drop of it shall touch me until I meet Allah عز وجل."
