حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ وَابِصَةَ بْنَ مَعْبَدٍ صَاحِبَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ جِئْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّ
هُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ الْبِرِّ وَالْإِثْمِ فَقَالَ جِئْتَ تَسْأَلُ عَنْ الْبِرِّ وَالْإِثْمِ فَقُلْتُ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا جِئْتُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ عَنْ غَيْرِهِ فَقَالَ الْبِرُّ مَا انْشَرَحَ لَهُ صَدْرُكَ وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي صَدْرِكَ وَإِنْ أَفْتَاكَ عَنْهُ النَّاسُ

English Translation
Wābiṣah ibn Maʿbad رضي الله عنه, a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ, said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ask him about righteousness and sin. He said: "You have come to ask about righteousness and sin?" I said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, I have not come to ask you about anything else." He said: "Righteousness is that which your heart feels at ease with. And sin is that which unsettles your heart — even if people give you rulings about it."
