Hadith #277

English Translation

Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us, Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from al-Zubayr Abū ʿAbd al-Salām, from Ayyūb ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn Mikraz, from Wābiṣah ibn Maʿbad, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ wanting not to leave anything of righteousness and sin without asking him about it. There was a gathering around him, so I began stepping over people. They said: 'Stay back, O Wābiṣah, from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ! Stay back, O Wābiṣah!' I said: 'I am Wābiṣah, let me draw near to him, for he is the most beloved of people to me to draw near to.' He said to me: 'Draw near, O Wābiṣah. Draw near, O Wābiṣah.' So I drew near to him until my knee touched his knee. He said: 'O Wābiṣah, shall I tell you what you came to ask me about, or will you ask me?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, then tell me.' He said: 'You came to ask me about righteousness and sin.' I said: 'Yes.' So he gathered his three fingers and began poking them into my chest, saying: 'O Wābiṣah, consult yourself. Righteousness is that which the heart finds tranquility in and the soul finds tranquility in, and sin is that which causes unease in the heart and hesitation in the chest, even if people give you verdicts.' Sufyān said: 'And even if they give you verdicts.'
