Hadith #282

English Translation

ʿAffān narrated to us, Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, al-Zubayr Abū ʿAbd al-Salām informed us, from Ayyūb ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn Mikraz — and he did not hear it from him directly. He said: His sitting companions narrated to me, and I had seen him — from Wābiṣah al-Asadī. ʿAffān said: He narrated to me more than once and did not say [that he heard it directly]. He said: I came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ wanting not to leave anything of righteousness and sin without asking him about it. Around him was a group of Muslims seeking his verdicts, so I began stepping over them. They said: 'Stay back, O Wābiṣah, from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ!' I said: 'Let me draw near to him, for he is the most beloved of people to me to draw near to.' He said: 'Leave Wābiṣah. Draw near, O Wābiṣah' — two or three times. So I drew near to him until I sat before him. He said: 'O Wābiṣah, shall I tell you or will you ask me?' I said: 'No, rather tell me.' He said: 'You came to ask about righteousness and sin.' He said: 'Yes.' So he gathered his fingertips and began poking them into my chest, saying: 'O Wābiṣah, consult your heart and consult yourself' — three times — 'Righteousness is that which the soul finds tranquility in, and sin is that which causes unease in the soul and hesitation in the chest, even if people give you verdicts and even if they give you verdicts.'
