حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ يَعْنِي البُرْسَانِيَّ أَخْبَرَنَا وُهَيْبُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَشْعَثِ قَالَ قَامَتْ خُطَبَاءُ بِإِيلِيَاءَ فِي إِمَارَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ فَتَكَلَّمُوا وَكَانَ آخِرَ مَنْ تَكَلَّمَ مُرَّةُ بْنُ كَعْبٍ فَقَالَ لَوْلَا حَدِيثٌ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْ
هِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا قُمْتُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَذْكُرُ فِتْنَةً فَقَرَّبَهَا فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ مُقَنَّعٌ فَقَالَ هَذَا يَوْمَئِذٍ وَأَصْحَابُهُ عَلَى الْحَقِّ وَالْهُدَى فَقُلْتُ هَذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَأَقْبَلْتُ بِوَجْهِهِ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ هَذَا فَإِذَا هُوَ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ

English Translation
Muḥammad ibn Bakr — meaning al-Bursānī — narrated to us, Wuhayb ibn Khālid informed us, Ayyūb narrated to us, from Abū Qilābah, from Abū al-Ashʿath, who said: Speakers stood up in Īliyāʾ during the governorship of Muʿāwiyah رضي الله تعالى عنه, and they spoke. The last to speak was Murrah ibn Kaʿb. He said: 'Were it not for a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, I would not have stood. I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ mentioning a tribulation and describing it as near. Then a man passed by with his head covered, and he said: "This man that day, and his companions, will be upon the truth and guidance." I said: "This one, O Messenger of Allāh?" and I turned his face toward him. He said: "This one." And it turned out to be ʿUthmān رضي الله عنه.'
