English Translation

Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAmr narrated to us: Zāʾidah narrated to us: Abū Janāb al-Kalbī narrated to us: Yazīd ibn al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib narrated to me, from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib رضي الله عنه who said: We were sitting in the prayer ground on the day of sacrifice. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and greeted the people, then said: 'The first of your rituals today is the prayer.' He stepped forward and prayed two rakʿahs, then gave the salām. He turned to face the people, was given a bow — or a staff — and leaned on it. He praised Allah and extolled Him, commanded and forbade them, and said: 'Whoever among you hastened his slaughter, it is merely a portion of meat he fed his family. The slaughter is only after the prayer.' My uncle Abū Burdah ibn Niyār stood up and said: 'I hastened the slaughter of my sheep, O Messenger of Allah, so food could be prepared for us to gather over when we return. I have a young she-goat of goat that is better than the one I slaughtered. Will it suffice for me, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Yes, but it will not suffice for anyone after you.' Then he said: 'O Bilāl!' He walked, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ followed him until he reached the women and said: 'O community of women, give charity! Charity is better for you.' I never saw a day with more bracelets removed, necklaces, and earrings than that day.
