Ismāʿīl narrated to us: Abū Ḥayyān al-Taymī narrated to us, from Abū Zurʿah ibn ʿAmr ibn Jarīr, from al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr رضي الله عنه who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Indeed, among what you mention of the glorification of Allah, the declaration of His oneness, the declaration of His holiness, and the praise of Him — they circle around the Throne buzzing like the buzzing of bees, reminding of their companion. Does not one of you love to have something — or: someone — that continues to remind of him?'

Ismāʿīl narrated to us: Abū Ḥayyān al-Taymī narrated to us, from al-Shaʿbī, from al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr رضي الله عنه who said: His father gave him a gift, so his mother ʿAmrah bint Rawāḥah said: 'I will not be pleased until you have the Messenger of Allah ﷺ bear witness to it.' So he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'I have given my son from ʿAmrah bint Rawāḥah a gift, and she told me to have you bear witness to it, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Have you given all your children the like of this?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Then fear Allah and treat your children equally.' So he returned and took back his gift.

Then he said: 'Indeed, the people of the Jāhiliyyah used to say that the sun and moon do not eclipse except for the death of a great person. Rather, the sun and moon are two signs among the signs of Allah عز وجل; when one of them eclipses — or: when something happens to one of them — pray the best prayer you have ever prayed until it clears.'

Hushaym narrated to us: Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind informed us, from al-Shaʿbī, from al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr رضي الله عنه who said: Two men disputed before the Prophet ﷺ — or: Shall I not judge between them with the judgment of the Prophet ﷺ? When two men disputed before the Prophet ﷺ, and one of them said: "Between us is the Book of Allah." And the other — who was more knowledgeable than him — said: "You have spoken well, the Book of Allah, so the Book of Allah does not prevent my right." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "You have spoken correctly, and ʿUmar used to say: Between you and me is the Book of Allah." Then ʿUmar came to them with the sword and struck the one who said: "I am not pleased with the judgment of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ" and killed him. So {Is it not sufficient for them that We revealed to you the Book which is recited to them?} was revealed, and the verse about the siqāyat al-ḥājj was revealed.

So whoever avoids the doubtful matters has safeguarded his religion and his honor, and whoever falls into the doubtful matters falls into the unlawful, like the shepherd who grazes around a sanctuary, nearly grazing in it. Indeed, every king has a sanctuary, and indeed the sanctuary of Allah is His prohibitions.'

Some of them got the upper deck and some got the lower deck. When those in the lower deck wanted water, they would pass by those above them and said: If we bored a hole in our share, we would not harm those above us. If they left them to what they wanted, they would all perish together. But if they took hold of their hands, they would be saved and they would all be saved together.'

He was given permission and entered, and said: 'O daughter of Umm Rūmān!' — and he reached for her — 'Do you raise your voice at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' the Prophet ﷺ intervened between him and her. When Abū Bakr left, the Prophet ﷺ began saying to her, seeking to please her: 'Do you not see that I intervened between the man and you?' Then Abū Bakr came again and sought permission, and found him laughing with her. He was given permission and entered, and Abū Bakr said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, include me in your peace as you included me in your war.'

ʿAffān narrated to us: Abū ʿAwānah narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Muntashir, from his father, from Ḥabīb ibn Sālim, from al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr رضي الله عنه who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in the two ʿEid prayers and on Friday: {Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High} and {Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming Event?}. And sometimes when the two ʿEids coincided on the same day, he would recite them in both. Abū ʿAwānah said: And sometimes two ʿEids coincided on the same day.

Sufyān narrated to us: Mujālid narrated to us who said: I heard al-Shaʿbī say: I heard al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr رضي الله عنه say — while he was governor of al-Kūfah: My father gave me a servant, so I came to the Prophet ﷺ to have him bear witness. He said: 'Have you given all your children such gifts?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Then I will not bear witness to injustice.'

Sufyān narrated to us, from Mujālid, from al-Shaʿbī — he heard it from al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: 'The likeness of the one who compromises regarding the limits of Allah and the one who falls into them is like three people who boarded a ship. One of them got the lower, rougher, and worst part. He would go back and forth, and it became burdensome for him each time he passed. So he said: Let me bore a hole so it will be easier for me and I will not have to go past them. Some of them said: He is only boring a hole in his own share. But others said: No! If they take hold of his hands, he will be saved and they will be saved. But if they leave him, he will perish and they will perish.'

Sufyān narrated to us, from Mujālid: al-Shaʿbī narrated to us — he heard it from al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — and whenever he would say 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,' I thought I would never hear anyone on the minbar say 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ' again — say: 'Indeed, in the human being there is a piece of flesh: if it is healthy and sound, the rest of the body is healthy and sound; and if it is sick, the rest of the body is sick and corrupted. Indeed, it is the heart.'

They are not recited in a house for three nights without the Shayṭān coming near it.' ʿAffān said: 'without it being approached.'
