Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ قَالَ حَفِظْتُهُ مِنْ أَبِي فَرْوَةَ أَوَّلًا ثُمَّ مِنْ مُجَالِدٍ سَمِعَهُ مِنَ الشَّعْبِيِّ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ النُّعْمَانَ بْنَ بَشِيرٍ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَكُنْتُ إِذَا سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَصْغَيْتُ وَتَقَرَّبْتُ وَخَشِيتُ أَنْ لَا أَسْمَعَ أَحَدًا يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم
َ يَقُولُ حَلَالٌ بَيِّنٌ وَحَرَامٌ بَيِّنٌ وَشُبُهَاتٌ بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ مَنْ تَرَكَ مَا اشْتَبَهَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ الْإِثْمِ كَانَ لِمَا اسْتَبَانَ لَهُ أَتْرَكَ وَمَنْ اجْتَرَأَ عَلَى مَا شَكَّ فِيهِ أَوْشَكَ أَنْ يُوَاقِعَ الْحَرَامَ وَإِنَّ لِكُلِّ مَلِكٍ حِمًى وَإِنَّ حِمَى اللَّهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ مَعَاصِيهِ أَوْ قَالَ مَحَارِمُهُ

English Translation
Wakīʿ narrated to us: Zakariyyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah narrated to us, from al-Shaʿbī, from al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr رضي الله عنه who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters. Whoever leaves what he suspects to be sinful for what he does not suspect is sinful has cleared himself. And whoever takes the courage to do what he is doubtful about is liable to fall into what is clearly unlawful. And sins are the sanctuary of Allah; whoever grazes around a sanctuary is liable to enter it.'
