قَالَ عَبْد اللَّهِ وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ أَبِي بِخَطِّ يَدِهِ كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ أَبُو تَوْبَةَ يَعْنِي الْحَلَبِيَّ فَكَانَ فِي كِتَابِهِ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ عَنْ أَخِيهِ زَيْدِ بْنِ سَلَّامٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا سَلَّامٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي النُّعْمَانُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ إِلَى جَانِبِ مِنْبَرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مَا أُبَالِ أَنْ لَا أَعْمَلَ بَعْدَ الْ
إِسْلَامِ إِلَّا أَنْ أَسْقِيَ الْحَاجَّ وَقَالَ آخَرُ مَا أُبَالِ أَنْ لَا أَعْمَلَ عَمَلًا بَعْدَ الْإِسْلَامِ إِلَّا أَنْ أَعْمُرَ الْمَسْجِدَ الْحَرَامَ وَقَالَ آخَرُ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَفْضَلُ مِمَّا قُلْتُمْ فَزَجَرَهُمْ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ فَقَالَ لَا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ عِنْدَ مِنْبَرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلَكِنْ إِذَا صَلَّيْتُ الْجُمُعَةَ دَخَلْتُ فَاسْتَفْتَيْتُهُ فِيمَا اخْتَلَفْتُمْ فِيهِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ { أَجَعَلْتُمْ سِقَايَةَ الْحَاجِّ وَعِمَارَةَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ كَمَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ } إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ كُلِّهَا

English Translation
Hushaym narrated to us: Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind informed us, from al-Shaʿbī, from al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr رضي الله عنه who said: Two men disputed before the Prophet ﷺ — or: Shall I not judge between them with the judgment of the Prophet ﷺ? When two men disputed before the Prophet ﷺ, and one of them said: "Between us is the Book of Allah." And the other — who was more knowledgeable than him — said: "You have spoken well, the Book of Allah, so the Book of Allah does not prevent my right." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "You have spoken correctly, and ʿUmar used to say: Between you and me is the Book of Allah." Then ʿUmar came to them with the sword and struck the one who said: "I am not pleased with the judgment of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ" and killed him. So {Is it not sufficient for them that We revealed to you the Book which is recited to them?} was revealed, and the verse about the siqāyat al-ḥājj was revealed.
