English Translation
Ismāʿīl — meaning Ibn ʿUlayyah — narrated to us: Shuʿbah informed us, from al-Ḥakam ibn ʿUtaybah, that Abū ʿUbaydah ibn ʿAbdillāh was appointed over the prayer during the days of Ibn al-Ashʿath. When he raised his head from bowing, he would stand for the duration it takes to say — or he said as long as his saying: "O Allah, our Lord, to You belongs all praise, filling the heavens and filling the earth and filling whatever You will beyond that. You are worthy of praise and glory. None can withhold what You give, and none can give what You withhold, and no wealth or might can benefit its owner against You." Al-Ḥakam said: I mentioned that to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, and he said: Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib narrated to me that the bowing of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his standing after raising his head from bowing, his prostration, and what was between the two prostrations were all nearly equal in duration.
