English Translation

Yaḥyā narrated to us, from Shuʿbah: Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to me, from ʿUbayd ibn Fayrūz, who said: I asked al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib: Tell me what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade or disliked regarding sacrificial animals. He said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among us — and my hand is shorter than his hand — and said: "Four are not acceptable: the one-eyed whose defect is obvious, the sick whose sickness is obvious, the lame whose limping is obvious, and the broken one that has no marrow." I said: I dislike there being a deficiency in the tooth, or a deficiency in the ear, or a deficiency in the horn. He said: "Whatever you dislike, leave it, but do not prohibit it for anyone." ʿAffān narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us: Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān informed me, saying: I heard ʿUbayd ibn Fayrūz, a freed slave of Banū Shaybān, say that he asked al-Barāʾ about sacrificial animals — and he mentioned the hadith.
