Hadith #176
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ أَبِي دَاوُدَ قَالَ لَقِيتُ الْبَرَاءَ بْنَ عَازِبٍ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيَّ وَأَخَذَ بِيَدِي وَضَحِكَ فِي وَجْهِي قَالَ تَدْرِي لِمَ فَعَلْتُ هَذَا بِكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَا أَدْرِي وَلَكِنْ لَا أَرَاكَ فَعَلْتَهُ إِلَّ
ا لِخَيْرٍ قَالَ إِنَّهُ لَقِيَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَفَعَلَ بِي مِثْلَ الَّذِي فَعَلْتُ بِكَ فَسَأَلَنِي فَقُلْتُ مِثْلَ الَّذِي قُلْتَ لِي فَقَالَ مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ فَيُسَلِّمُ أَحَدُهُمَا عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ وَيَأْخُذُ بِيَدِهِ لَا يَأْخُذُهُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَا يَتَفَرَّقَانِ حَتَّى يُغْفَرَ لَهُمَا

English Translation
Ibn Numayr narrated to us: Mālik informed us, from Abū Dāwūd, who said: I met al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, and he greeted me, took my hand, and smiled in my face. He said: "Do you know why I did this to you?" I said: "I do not know, but I can see you only did it for good." He said: "the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met me and did to me what I just did to you, and he asked me, so I said the same as you said to me. He said: No two Muslims meet and one of them greets the other and takes his hand — taking it only for the sake of Allah عز وجل — without being forgiven before they part."
