English Translation

Aswad ibn ʿĀmir and Abū Aḥmad narrated to us, saying: Isrāʾīl narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ, who said: The Companions of Muḥammad ﷺ, if a man was fasting and the time for breaking the fast came but he fell asleep before eating, he would not eat that night or the next day until evening. A certain man from the Anṣār was fasting, and when the time for breaking the fast came, he went to his wife and said: "Do you have any food?" She said: "No, but let me go and find some for you." Sleep overcame him, and his wife returned. When she saw him, she said: "How unfortunate for you!" By the time midday came, he fainted. This was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, so this verse was revealed: "It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives" to His saying: "until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black thread" [al-Baqarah 2:187]. Abū Aḥmad said: Qays ibn Ṣirmah al-Anṣārī came and slept — and he mentioned it. Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik narrated to us: Zuhayr narrated to us: Abū Isḥāq from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib — that one of them, if he slept — and he mentioned something similar to the hadith of Isrāʾīl, except he said: It was revealed regarding Abū Qays ibn ʿAmr.
