Hadith #317

English Translation

Yaḥyā and Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated from Shuʿbah, from Ṭalḥah ibn Muṣarrif, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwsajah, from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, narrating from the Prophet ﷺ who said: 'Whoever gives a gift of silver, or guides along a pathway, or provides milk to drink — it is for him the equivalent of [freeing] a slave or a soul. And whoever says: "There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs dominion and to Him belongs praise, and He has power over all things" ten times — it is for him the equivalent of [freeing] a slave or a soul.' And he [the Prophet ﷺ] used to come to us when we stood for prayer and wipe our chests — or shoulders — saying: 'Do not let your rows differ, lest your hearts differ.' And he used to say: 'Indeed Allah and His angels send blessings upon the first row — or the first rows.' And he said: 'Beautify the Quran with your voices.' [The narrator said:] 'I had forgotten it, then al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Muzāḥim reminded me of it.'
