Hadith #552

English Translation

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad narrated to us — ʿAbd Allāh said: and I also heard it from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Shaybah — Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Fazārī narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṭāʾifī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Khālid al-ʿAdwānī, from his father, that he saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the eastern side of Thaqīf. He was standing leaning on a bow or a staff when he came to them seeking their support. He said: I heard him reciting {By the sky and the night-comer} [86:1] until he finished it. He said: I memorized it in the pre-Islamic period while I was still a polytheist, then I recited it in Islam. He said: Thaqīf summoned me and said: "What did you hear from this man?" So I recited it to them. Those from Quraysh who were with them said: "We know our fellow better. If we knew what he says is true, we would have followed him."
