حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ زُهْرَةَ بْنِ مَعْبَدٍ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ آخِذٌ بِيَدِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ فَقَالَ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَأَنْتَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْ
ءٍ إِلَّا نَفْسِي فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ قَالَ فَأَنْتَ الْآنَ وَاللَّهِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ نَفْسِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْآنَ يَا عُمَرُ

English Translation
Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us, from Zuhrah ibn Maʿbad, from his grandfather, who said: We were with the Prophet ﷺ and he was holding the hand of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله تعالى عنه. ʿUmar said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, you are more beloved to me than everything except myself." the Prophet ﷺ said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, none of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his own self." ʿUmar said: "Then now, by Allah, you are more beloved to me than my own self." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Now, O ʿUmar."
