English Translation
Jarīr narrated: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the early part of the day when a group of people came to him — barefoot, naked, wearing striped woolen cloaks (nimār) or ʿabāʾ, with swords slung around them, most of them — rather, all of them — from Muḍar. The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed when he saw their destitution. He entered, then came out and commanded Bilāl, who gave the adhān and iqāmah. He prayed, then delivered a sermon saying: {O mankind, fear your Lord who created you from a single soul} to the end of the verse {Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer}, and he recited the verse from al-Ḥashr: {And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow.} 'Let a man give charity from his dīnārs, from his dirhams, from his garments, from a ṣāʿ of his wheat, from a ṣāʿ of his dates' — until he said — 'even if it be half a date.' Then a man from the Anṣār came with a pouch that his hand could barely hold — indeed it could not — and then people followed in succession until I saw two mounds of food and clothing. I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ beaming as though it were gilded. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever introduces a good practice in Islam shall have its reward and the reward of all who act upon it after him, without any of their rewards being diminished. And whoever introduces an evil practice in Islam shall bear its burden and the burden of all who act upon it after him, without any of their burdens being diminished.' Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim narrated from Shuʿbah, from ʿAwn ibn Abī Juḥayfah, from Mundhir ibn Jarīr, from his father — a similar narration, except he said: He commanded Bilāl, who gave the adhān, then he entered, then came out and prayed. And he said: as though it were gilded.
