He lodged us in a tent of his, and he would come to us between his houses and the mosque. When he prayed the ʿIshāʾ prayer, he would come to us and would not leave, narrating to us and complaining about Quraysh and the people of Makkah. Then he would say, 'It was not the same — we were humiliated and oppressed in Makkah. But when we went to Madinah, the fortunes of war went back and forth between us and them.' One night he stayed away from us and did not come until it was long after ʿIshāʾ. We said, 'What kept you from us, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'A portion of the Quran came upon me and I wanted to not leave until I completed it.' We then asked the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the morning, 'How do you divide the Quran into portions?' They said, 'We divide it into six surahs, five surahs, seven surahs, nine surahs, eleven surahs, thirteen surahs, and the portion of al-Mufaṣṣal from Sūrah Qāf until the end.'

He said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Name yourselves with the names of the Prophet ﷺs. The most beloved of names to Allah عز وجل are ʿAbd Allāh and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. The most truthful are Ḥārith and Hammām. The ugliest are Ḥarb and Murrah. Keep horses, stroke their forelocks and their haunches — or he said: their rumps — and put halters on them, but do not put bowstrings on them. Choose every dark bay with a white blaze and white stockings, or a chestnut with a white blaze and white stockings, or a black with a white blaze and white stockings.' Abū al-Mughīrah narrated to us, Muḥammad ibn al-Muhājir narrated to us, ʿAqīl ibn Shabīb narrated to us, from Abū Wahb al-Kalāʿī who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said — and he mentioned the like of it. Muḥammad said: I do not know whether he began with the dark bay or the black. He said: They asked him why he favored the chestnut. He said, 'Because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an expedition, and the first to bring the news of victory was the rider of the chestnut.'

Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us — he was asked about a man who receives a greeting while not in a state of ablution — so he said: Saʿīd narrated to us, from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from al-Ḥuḍayn Abū Sāsān, from al-Muhājir ibn Qunfudh رضي الله عنه, that he greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was performing ablution. He did not return the greeting until he completed his ablution, then he returned it and said, 'Nothing prevented me from returning your greeting except that I disliked mentioning Allah except in a state of purity.' Al-Ḥasan, because of this hadith, used to dislike reciting or mentioning Allah عز وجل until he purified himself.

ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated to us, Shaybān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us, from al-Rukayn ibn al-Rabīʿ, from his father, from his uncle Fulān ibn ʿAmīlah, from Khuraym ibn Fātik al-Asadī رضي الله عنه, that the Prophet ﷺ said, 'People are of four types and deeds are of six types. People are either those who are given abundance in this world and the Hereafter; those given abundance in this world but restricted in the Hereafter; those restricted in this world but given abundance in the Hereafter; or those wretched in both this world and the Hereafter. As for deeds: there are two that are decisive, like for like, tenfold, and seven hundredfold. The two decisive ones are: whoever dies as a believing Muslim, not associating anything with Allah, Paradise becomes obligatory for him; and whoever dies as a disbeliever, the Fire becomes obligatory for him. Whoever intends a good deed but does not do it, and Allah knows that he has taken it to heart and was keen on it, a good deed is written for him. Whoever intends an evil deed, it is not written against him. Whoever commits it, one sin is written and it is not multiplied against him. Whoever does a good deed, it counts as ten like it. And whoever spends in the way of Allah, it is multiplied seven hundred fold.'

Then I went to my family and laughed and played with my family and children. I recalled what I had been like in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I went out and met Abū Bakr and said, 'O Abū Bakr, Ḥanẓalah has become a hypocrite!' He said, 'What is that about?' I said, 'We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we mentioned Paradise and the Fire until it was as if we could see them, then I went to my family and laughed and played with my children and family.' He said, 'We do the same.' So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said, 'O Ḥanẓalah, if you were to remain in your homes as you are when with me, the angels would shake your hands on your beds and on the roads. O Ḥanẓalah, an hour for this and an hour for that.'

Then he stood and entered the storehouse of charity dates, and the boy entered with him and took a date and put it in his mouth. the Prophet ﷺ extracted it and said, 'Charity is not permissible for us.'
