Yazīd ibn Ḥayyān al-Taymī narrated: I, Ḥuṣayn ibn Sabrah, and ʿUmar ibn Muslim went to Zayd ibn Arqam. When we sat with him, Ḥuṣayn said to him: 'You have indeed encountered much good, O Zayd — you saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, heard his words, fought alongside him, and prayed behind him. You have indeed encountered much good, O Zayd. Tell us, O Zayd, what you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said: 'O nephew, by Allah, I have grown old and my time is long past, and I have forgotten some of what I used to retain from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So accept what I narrate to you, and what I do not, do not burden me with it.' Then he said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among us at a watering place called Khumm, between Makkah and Madīnah. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then admonished and reminded, and said: As for what follows — O people, I am but a human being. The messenger of my Lord (the angel of death) is about to come and I will respond. I am leaving among you two weighty things: the first is the Book of Allah, in which there is guidance and light, so hold fast to the Book of Allah and cling to it.' He urged and encouraged regarding the Book of Allah, then said: 'And my Household (Ahl al-Bayt). I remind you of Allah regarding my Household. I remind you of Allah regarding my Household. I remind you of Allah regarding my Household.' Ḥuṣayn said to him: 'And who are his Household, O Zayd? Are not his wives part of his Household?' He said: 'His wives are part of his Household, but his Household are those for whom charity (ṣadaqah) is forbidden after him.' He asked: 'And who are they?' He said: 'They are the family of ʿAlī, the family of ʿAqīl, the family of Jaʿfar, and the family of ʿAbbās.' He asked: 'Is charity forbidden for all of them?' He said: 'Yes.'
