ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim narrated: When Allah عز وجل sent the Prophet ﷺ, I fled from him until I was at the farthest land of the Muslims bordering the Romans. I detested that place more than when I first came. I said: 'I shall go to this man. By Allah, if he is truthful, I shall hear from him, and if he is a liar, he will not harm me.' So I went to him. The people recognized me and said: 'ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim! ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim!' — I think he said three times. He said to me: 'O ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim, accept Islam and you will be safe.' I said: 'I am a man of religion.' He said: 'O ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim, accept Islam and you will be safe' — three times. He said: 'I know your religion better than you.' I said: 'You know my religion better than I?' He said: 'Yes. Are you not the chief of your people?' He mentioned al-Rakūsiyyah. He said: 'It is not lawful in your religion to take the mirbaʿ (quarter of spoils).' When he said that, I humbled myself a little. He said: 'I see that what prevents you is the poverty you see around me, and that the people are united against us. Do you know of al-Ḥīrah?' I said: 'I have heard of it but have not been there.' He said: 'Soon the lone woman traveler will depart from there without escort until she circumambulates the Kaʿbah. And soon the treasures of Kisrā ibn Hurmuz will be conquered.' I said: 'Kisrā ibn Hurmuz?' He said: 'Kisrā ibn Hurmuz' — three times. 'And soon a man will seek someone to accept his charity and will find no one.' ʿAdī said: 'I have seen two of them fulfilled: the lone woman traveling from al-Ḥīrah without escort to circumambulate the Kaʿbah, and I was among the cavalry that raided al-Madāʾin. And by Allah, the third will certainly come to pass — it is the hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who told it to me.'
