English Translation
Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb narrated to us, Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, Ghaylān ibn Jarīr narrated to me, from Abū Burdah ibn Abī Mūsā, from his father, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a group of Ashʿarīs asking him to provide us with mounts. He said: 'No, by Allah, I will not provide you with mounts, and I have nothing to mount you on.' We stayed as long as Allah willed, then he ordered three white-humped camels for us. When we set off, some of us said to others: 'We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking him for mounts, and he swore not to mount us — let us go back and remind him.' So we came back to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we came to you asking for mounts, and you swore not to mount us, then you provided us mounts.' He said: 'It was not I who mounted you, but Allah عز وجل who mounted you. By Allah, if Allah wills, I never swear an oath and then see something better than it except that I do what is better and expiate for my oath' — or he said: 'except that I expiate for my oath and do what is better.'
