Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, ʿAwf narrated to us, from Abū al-Minhāl who said: My father said to me: Come with me to Abū Barzah al-Aslamī. So I went with him until we entered his house, and he was sitting in the shade of an upper room made of reeds. We sat with him on an intensely hot day. My father asked him: Tell me, how did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray the obligatory prayers? He said: He used to pray the Ẓuhr — which you call the first prayer — when the sun began to decline. He would pray ʿAṣr, and one of us could return to his place at the farthest end of Madīnah while the sun was still bright. He said: I forgot what he said about Maghrib. He preferred to delay ʿIshāʾ, which you call al-ʿAtamah. He disliked sleeping before it and talking after it. He would finish the Fajr prayer when one of us could recognize his companion, and he used to recite between sixty and one hundred verses.
