Hadith #330

English Translation

‘Abd al-Razzāq narrated to us, Ma‘mar narrated to us, from Bahz ibn Ḥakīm ibn Mu‘āwiyah, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: the Prophet ﷺ seized some people from my tribe on suspicion and imprisoned them. Then a man from my tribe came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was delivering a sermon and said: ‘O Muḥammad, on what grounds do you imprison my neighbors?’ the Prophet ﷺ remained silent. Then he said: ‘Indeed people say that you forbid evil yet indulge in it privately.’ the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘What is he saying?’ [Bahz] said: So I kept trying to intervene between them with words, fearing that [the Prophet ﷺ] might invoke a supplication against my people from which they would never prosper. the Prophet ﷺ continued engaging him until he understood, then said: ‘They have indeed said it — or the one among them who said it. By Allāh, if I were doing that, it would be against me and not against them. Release his neighbors to him.’”
