English Translation

Hushaym narrated to us, Manṣūr and Yūnus informed us, from al-Ḥasan, from Samurah ibn Jundub: When he led them in prayer, he would observe two pauses of silence: when he opened the prayer, and when he said ‘and not of those who have gone astray’ (wǎlā al-ḍāllīn), he would pause briefly as well. They disputed this with him, so he wrote to Ubayy ibn Ka‘b, who wrote back: The matter is as Samurah has done. (‘Affān narrated to us, Yazīd ibn Zuray‘ narrated to us, from Yūnus, who said: And when he finishes reciting the sūrah (he pauses).)
