English Translation

It was narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: 'The Day of Ashura was a day that Quraysh used to fast in the pre-Islamic period, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast it. When he came to Medina, he fasted it and commanded others to fast it. But when the fast of Ramadan was revealed, Ramadan became the obligation and Ashura was abandoned. Whoever wished would fast it, and whoever wished would not fast it.'
