حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ وَابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ عَنْ دَاوُدَ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ قَالَ لَقِيتُ أَبَا الدَّرْدَاءِ قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ فِي حَدِيثِهِ فَقَدِمْتُ الشَّامَ فَلَقِيتُ أَبَا الدَّرْدَاءِ قَالَ مِمَّنْ أَنْتَ قُلْتُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ قَالَ هَلْ تَقْرَأُ عَلَيَّ قِرَاءَةَ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ
قَالَ فَاقْرَأْ وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى قُلْتُ { وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّى } وَالذَّكَرِ وَالْأُنْثَى قَالَ هَكَذَا سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْرَؤُهَا قَالَ أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ فَضَحِكَ

English Translation
It was narrated from Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Recite: 'By the night when it covers' — I recite it as: 'By the night when it covers, and by the day when it brightens — and the male and the female.'" He said: "This is how I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite it, and these people want me to recite 'and that which He created' — I will not follow them."
