English Translation
It was narrated from Sa'd (رضي الله عنه) who said: 'It was regarding me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ established the rule of one-third [in bequests]. He came to visit me while I was ill and said: Have you made a bequest? I said: Yes, I have bequeathed all my wealth for the sake of Allah. He said: A quarter. I said: [All of it.] He said: A third, and a third is much. That the heirs you leave behind be wealthy is better than leaving them poor, begging from people.'
